₹1,113 Crore Ujjain Water Project Promises Zero Shortage During Simhastha 2028

150 MLD treatment plant, 700 km network

A new 150 MLD water-treatment plant is being built on Ujjain's outskirts, supported by a 700-kilometre distribution grid that will connect major Simhastha zones, residential pockets, and ghats along the Shipra River.

A senior official from the Public Health Engineering Department said the system will "ensure consistent, safe water supply throughout the festival and beyond."

17 overhead tanks to stabilise supply

The city is installing 17 overhead tanks equipped with automated valves and smart sensors to maintain pressure and prevent leakage. The entire network will be monitored from a central digital control room operated by the Ujjain Municipal Corporation.

Real-time quality monitoring

To guarantee potable water, the project includes:

• IoT-based quality sensors at major distribution points
• UV and chlorination units at pumping stations
• Underground reservoirs near ghats for high-demand hours
• Backup tanker routes in case of technical interruptions

Officials say these measures will ensure every pilgrim and resident has access to safe drinking water.

Eco-friendly, long-term design

Energy-efficient pumps, solar-powered units, and rainwater harvesting structures form a key part of the system. The initiative aligns with the government's Sustainable Simhastha 2028 model, focused on reducing waste and environmental impact.

Benefits after the festival

Beyond Simhastha, Ujjain's expanded supply network will support the city's growing population and new residential clusters. The upgraded system is expected to strengthen Ujjain's water security for the next 25 years.

Ujjain Development Authority Commissioner Ashish Pathak described the scheme as "a festival requirement and a long-term public-health investment."

Part of the ₹20,000 crore Simhastha mission

The project is one component of the larger infrastructure plan that includes:

• 581 km of widened roads
• The new MR-22 riverfront road
• 29 km of improved ghats
• The ₹919 crore Kanh Diversion Closed Duct scheme to keep the Shipra clean

Together, these upgrades aim to make Ujjain a model of faith-based urban planning.
