UP Launches Mahakumbh Climate Declaration: Green Transformation for Religious Sites

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the ‘Mahakumbh Declaration on Climate Change’ at a faith-climate conference in Prayagraj. The initiative aims to transform religious sites into eco-friendly hubs.

Key Highlights of the Mahakumbh Declaration

  1. Solar Energy Adoption: Install solar panels at temples, mosques, gurdwaras, and other shrines.
  2. Rainwater Harvesting: Implement systems to conserve water during pilgrimages.
  3. Waste Recycling: Manage temple waste through segregation and recycling programs.
  4. Plastic Ban: Prohibit single-use plastics at religious sites.
  5. Green Zones: Create tree-rich areas around sacred spaces to improve air quality.

CM Adityanath’s Call for Collective Action

Adityanath linked climate change to drying rivers and extreme weather. “Greenhouse gases are raising temperatures. We must act now, not blame others,” he said. He highlighted clean Ganga efforts, noting 10,000–11,000 cusecs of water ensure smooth Kumbh pilgrimages.

Faith-Driven Climate Initiatives

The declaration funds faith groups to promote eco-education and campaigns. Plans include:

  • Eco-Friendly Pilgrimages: Reduce carbon footprints during religious travel.
  • Green Festivals: Use biodegradable materials in rituals and celebrations.
  • Sustainable Temple Management: Train priests in energy and water conservation.

Experts and Faith Leaders Back the Move

Chandra Bhushan, CEO of IFOREST, said, “Faith leaders can drive climate action culturally.” Swami Mukundananda and Swami Chidanand Saraswati stressed using religious teachings to protect nature.

Impact on Mahakumbh 2024

Cleaner rivers and better facilities boosted Kumbh attendance. Over 5 crore pilgrims visited since January 13, citing improved water quality and infrastructure.
