Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh | November 2025: Ujjain is undergoing a major sanitation overhaul as part of its preparations for Simhastha 2028, with the state government rolling out a ₹476.06 crore sewerage pipeline and treatment plant project to strengthen hygiene and public health across the city. Officials say the initiative is designed to ensure clean surroundings, safe water flow, and pollution-free ghats during one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

Citywide Sewerage Network for Festival & Urban Zones

The integrated pipeline system covers both urban wards and Simhastha sectors, ensuring efficient collection and treatment of wastewater from homes, temporary camps, and major ghats. The plan includes a vast network of underground pipelines, new pumping stations, and expanded treatment capacity for peak festival months. A municipal official said the upgrade is “one of Ujjain’s most crucial civic enhancements for Simhastha 2028.”

High-Tech Sewage Treatment Plants

The upcoming STPs will use modern bio-filtration and aeration systems to treat wastewater efficiently. Key features include:

  • Decentralized treatment units in high-density mela zones
  • Odour-control systems
  • Automated sludge drying
  • Reuse of treated water for irrigation and road cleaning
  • Real-time online monitoring

All units will follow CPCB discharge norms, ensuring no untreated wastewater enters the Shipra River.

Swachh Ujjain, Swasth Ujjain

The project supports both Swachh Bharat Mission and the Zero Waste Simhastha 2028 campaign. Authorities are introducing community awareness drives and volunteer teams to promote daily cleanliness and responsible waste disposal. UDA Commissioner Ashish Pathak said the mission is aimed at building a long-term culture of hygiene, not just temporary arrangements.

Cleaner Shipra, Better Public Health

Officials say the upgraded system will reduce:

  • Water pollution in the Shipra
  • Spread of water-borne diseases
  • Waste accumulation in crowded festival zones

It will also improve groundwater quality and support the Kanh Diversion Closed Duct Plan, preventing urban runoff from contaminating natural water bodies.

Part of Ujjain’s ₹20,000-Crore Transformation

The project is a vital component of the broader ₹20,000 crore Simhastha 2028 Master Plan, which also includes:

  • 581 km of road widening
  • 29 km ghat construction
  • ₹919 crore Kanh Diversion Closed Duct
  • ₹1,113 crore drinking water network

Together, these upgrades are reshaping Ujjain into a cleaner, smarter, and festival-ready city.

CM Dr. Mohan Yadav: Cleanliness Is Devotion

“Cleanliness is the essence of faith. This sewerage and treatment network will ensure every devotee experiences a pure and healthy environment,” said Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav while reviewing project progress.
