Key Highlights
- ₹614.53 crore project to ensure year-round clean flow in the Shipra River.
- Sewarkhedi barrage and lift canal system to store and release monsoon water.
- Major boost to Ujjain’s preparedness for Simhastha 2028.
Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh — November 2025: In a major step toward reviving the Shipra River ahead of Simhastha 2028, the Madhya Pradesh government has launched the ₹614.53 crore Sewarkhedi–Silarkhedi Water Management Project. The initiative aims to ensure that the river — central to Ujjain’s spiritual identity — maintains a clean, continuous flow throughout the year. Officials say the project is critical as Ujjain prepares to host over 30 crore devotees during the next Simhastha Mahakumbh.
Barrage and Lift Canal System in Progress
The project’s core component is a barrage at Sewarkhedi, supported by a lift canal system that will transport rainwater to the Silarkhedi reservoir. During monsoon months, nearly 51 million cubic meters of water will be stored and later released into the Shipra during dry periods. A senior Water Resources Department official said the system will provide a “perennial and pollution-free flow” in the river, benefiting pilgrims and the ecosystem alike.
Key Goals Behind the Initiative
The project focuses on:
- Maintaining year-round river flow, especially during Simhastha
- Reducing Ujjain’s dependence on groundwater
- Improving overall water quality, aligned with the Kanh Diversion Project
- Ensuring reliable supply for ritual bathing, sanitation, and city needs
Engineering, Efficiency, and Ecology
The project incorporates modern hydraulic systems, energy-efficient pumps, and smart flow controls. Water will be moved through a closed conduit network to minimize evaporation losses. A project engineer noted that the effort represents “engineering with environmental responsibility” and is part of a broader strategy that includes the ₹919 crore Kanh Diversion Project and the Zero Waste Simhastha Mission.
Benefits for Pilgrims and Local Residents
The improved system will:
- Guarantee clean water during Simhastha 2028
- Reduce seasonal shortages in nearby villages
- Support ecological revival of the Shipra
- Strengthen religious tourism and local livelihoods
Downstream farmers will also receive regulated water supplies, improving irrigation reliability.
Part of MP’s ₹20,000 Crore Ujjain Development Plan
The project is one of several large-scale works underway ahead of Simhastha, including:
- ₹919 crore Kanh Diversion Closed Duct Project
- ₹778 crore construction of 29 km of new ghats
- 581 km of road expansion and MR-22 riverfront corridor
Together, these initiatives aim to transform Ujjain’s infrastructure, environment, and pilgrimage experience.
CM Dr. Mohan Yadav on River Revival
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav praised the project, saying it will help preserve the sanctity of the Shipra for future generations.
“This is a sustainable and long-term solution for Ujjain’s sacred river,” he said after reviewing the ongoing work near Sewarkhedi.
