Why Indore Matters for Simhastha Pilgrims

Indore is the city that connects the rest of India to Ujjain during Simhastha. It has Madhya Pradesh's only significant international airport (IDR), the state's largest train connectivity, and its own extensive bus network. Pilgrims flying from across India - or from abroad - land at Indore and proceed to Ujjain from there.

But Indore matters for another reason: during Simhastha, Ujjain's accommodation capacity will be exhausted and rates will be high. Indore, 55 km away on a modern expressway, offers abundant hotels at significantly lower rates. Many experienced pilgrims deliberately stay in Indore and make the 1-hour daily commute to Ujjain for bathing and temple visits - returning to Indore each evening for a more comfortable night's rest.

From Indore Airport to Ujjain

The airport is located on Indore's periphery. From the airport, you have two stages: reaching Ujjain directly, or going into Indore city first.

  • Direct airport-to-Ujjain taxi: The most convenient option. Pre-paid taxi counters at the terminal offer fixed-rate transfers. Current rate: approximately ₹1,200-1,500. Journey time in normal traffic: 55-70 minutes. On Shahi Snan days, budget 90-120 minutes. Book inside the terminal.
  • Uber/Ola from airport: Usually ₹100-200 cheaper than pre-paid taxis. App connectivity is reliable at the airport. Book before leaving the terminal building.
  • Bus from Indore to Ujjain: Reach Indore's Sarwate Bus Stand first (₹150-250 by taxi, 25-35 mins). From Sarwate, buses to Ujjain depart every 15-20 minutes. Fare: ₹80-120. Journey time: 55-75 minutes.

The Stay-in-Indore Strategy

Many experienced Simhastha pilgrims swear by it. Ujjain during Simhastha will be at 5-10 times normal capacity. Hotel rates triple or quadruple. Traffic becomes intense. In contrast, Indore remains a functioning normal city.

Early morning bus: Buses run from Sarwate Bus Stand from 4:00 AM. A 4:30 AM bus arrives by 5:30-6:00 AM - well in time for morning temple visits. On Shahi Snan days, buses operate from 3:00 AM.

Return in the evening: Last buses from Ujjain run until 11:00 PM. After an evening at the temples and Ram Ghat's sunset Aarti, you can return to Indore.

The cost difference makes this strategy attractive. Indore hotels (₹1,000-2,000) may rise to ₹2,000-3,500 during Simhastha, but equivalent Ujjain hotels may charge ₹5,000-8,000. Even with daily bus fares, the savings are significant.

Direct Indore-Ujjain Road Options

The Indore-Ujjain expressway is a modern 4-6 lane road in excellent condition. The 55 km typically takes 55-70 minutes in a private vehicle.

On Shahi Snan days, traffic from Indore city itself begins getting heavy from 2:00 AM onward as pilgrims set out in the night. If you're driving, leave by 2:00 AM for the best experience - or accept that it may take 2-3 hours instead of 1 hour if you leave after 4:00 AM.

Petrol stations are available every 10-15 km on the expressway. The road is well-lit and heavily used - safe at all hours.
