Mythology: The Origin of the 84 Mahadev
According to Shiva Mahapurana & Skanda Purana
In ancient times, there was a demon named Dushan. He possessed a boon that wherever his blood fell, he would multiply into 84 forms. According to the Shiva Purana, the 84 Mahadevs are intricately linked to Lord Shankar’s sister, Shri Priya, who is known today as the Shipra River.
To annihilate the demon Dushan, Lord Shankar devised a plan: if Shri Priya arrived in the form of water, then upon killing the demon, his blood would instantly dissolve in the water, preventing his rebirth and multiplication into 84 forms. However, when Lord Shankar struck down demon Dushan, Shipra arrived slightly late, allowing the demon to manifest into 84 forms.
The Divine Intervention
Chaos erupted everywhere. Witnessing this catastrophic multiplication, sister Shipra poured her waters over her brother Shankar. As the sacred waters flowed, Lord Shankar’s body divided into 84 divine pieces, instantly destroying the 84 demonic forms. These divine pieces spread throughout Ujjaini in the form of Mahadev. In the entire world, Ujjain is the only place where all 84 Mahadev exist.
Importance of the 84 Mahadev
According to the Skanda Purana, a soul attains human birth only after wandering through 8.4 million yonis (life-forms). After taking human birth, whatever faults or sins we may have accumulated in that vast journey of 8.4 million yonis are completely cleansed by having the darshan of these 84 Mahadev.
It is deeply believed that at the time of Pralaya (the ultimate dissolution of the universe), only the 84 Mahadev will remain unmoved and eternal.
Timing of the Pilgrimage
The worship and parikrama of the 84 Mahadev located in the city of Mahakal, Ujjain, is especially performed during the auspicious month of Shravan.
When Purushottam Maas (Adhik Maas / intercalary month) arrives, this pilgrimage is also undertaken with immense devotion. During the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, the merit of completing this circuit is multiplied exponentially.

Shri Agastyeshwar Mahadev
mahākālavane divye yakṣagaṃdharvasevite | uttare vaṭayakṣiṇyā yattalliṃgamanuttamam ||
Meaning: In the divine Mahākālavana, frequented by Yakṣas and Gandharvas, to the north of Vaṭayakṣiṇī, is that unsurpassed liṅga.
Behind the Harsiddhi Temple in the temple of Santoshi Mata. The journey begins from here and after returning again to Shri Agastyeshwar Mahadev for darshan and worship, it is completed.
Shri Guheshwar Mahadev
rāmaghāṭe mahāpuṇye kṣiprātīrasamāśrite| guhyarūpeṇa deveśo guheśvara iti smṛtaḥ||
Meaning: At the supremely sacred Ram Ghat, situated on the banks of the holy Shipra River, the Lord resides in a hidden and secret form; therefore He is remembered as Guheshwar Mahadev.

Shri Dhundheshwar Mahadev
dhundheśvaraṃ mahādevaṃ kṣiprātīrasamāśritam| mohadhvānta vināśāya pūjayet śivabhaktitaḥ||
Meaning: On the banks of the holy Shipra River resides the great Lord known as Dhundheshwar Mahadev. He is worshipped to destroy the darkness of illusion and delusion, by those devoted to Lord Shiva.

Shri Damrukeshwar Mahadev
mahākālavane deva tāḍitāsttridaśāḥ prabho | vajreṇa ruruputreṇa tasmādyāhi maheśvara || 25 ||
Meaning: O Lord, in Mahākālavana the gods have been struck down by Vajra, son of Ruru; therefore go there, O Maheśvara.

Shri Anadikalpeshwar Mahadev
anādikalpasambhūtaṃ mahākālavane sthitam| sṛṣṭeḥ pūrvaṃ sthitaṃ liṅgaṃ anādikalpeśvaraṃ bhaje||
Meaning: I worship Anadikalpeshwar Mahadev, the Shiva Linga that existed before the beginning of creation, established in the sacred Mahakal forest, present even before the first cycle of time unfolded.

Shri Swarnajwaleshwar Mahadev
svarṇajvālāsamaprakhyaṃ tejorāśiṃ sanātanam| mahākālavane sthitaṃ svarṇajvāleśvaraṃ bhaje||
Meaning: I worship Swarnajwaleshwar Mahadev, whose form shines like blazing golden flames, the eternal reservoir of divine radiance, established within the sacred Mahakal forest.

Shri Trivishtapeshwar Mahadev
triviṣṭape mahāpuṇye devarājairniṣevitam| trailokyasākṣiṇaṃ śambhuṃ triviṣṭapeśvaraṃ bhaje||
Meaning: In the supremely sacred Trivishtap realm, worshipped by the kings of the gods, the witness of all the three worlds, I worship that Lord as Trivishtapeshwar Mahadev.

Shri Kapaleshwar Mahadev
kapālahastadhārī ca bhasmabhūṣitavigrahaḥ| kapāleśvarapūjāyāṃ vinaśyanti mahābhayāḥ||
Meaning: The one who bears the skull in His hand and whose form is adorned with sacred ash; through the worship of Kapaleshwar Mahadev, even the deepest fears and karmic burdens dissolve.

Shri Swargdwareshwar Mahadev
svargadvāre mahāpuṇye kṣiprātīrasamāśrite| mokṣamārgapradaṃ liṅgaṃ svargadvāreśvaraṃ bhaje||
Meaning: At the sacred gateway of heaven, situated on the banks of the holy Shipra River, that Shiva Linga which grants the path to liberation, I worship as Swargdwareshwar Mahadev.

Shri Karkoteshwar Mahadev
karkoṭatīrthasannaddhaṃ kṣiprātīranivāsinam| sarpadoṣavināśāya karkoṭeśvaramāśraye||
Meaning: I take refuge in Karkoteshwar Mahadev, who resides at the sacred Karkot Tirtha on the banks of the Shipra River, and who destroys afflictions caused by serpentine energies and removes deep-seated karmic disturbances.

Shri Siddheshwar Mahadev

Meaning: In the supremely sacred Siddha Kshetra, established within the holy Mahakal forest, that great Lord who grants spiritual attainments, we worship as Siddheshwar Mahadev.

Shri Lokpaleshwar Mahadev

Shri Ishaneshwar Mahadev

Meaning: I take refuge in Ishaneshwar Mahadev, who is established in the Ishana (northeast) direction, situated within the sacred Mahakal forest, and who bestows divine knowledge and wisdom.
