Nashik to Build 1,000-Acre Sadhugram for 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela | TDR Model for Land Acquisition

Nashik gears up for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela by expanding Sadhugram to 1,000 acres—triple its 2015 size—to host 7 lakh sadhus. Nashik Municipal Corporation Plans 1,000-Acre Sadhugram for 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) will expand the Sadhugram to 1,000 acres to host over 7 lakh sadhus during the 2026-2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. This is three times larger than the 2015 event’s 350-acre facility.

Why the Expansion?

  • Rising Attendance: Expecting 7 lakh sadhus in 2027, up from 2.5 lakh in 2015.
  • Permanent Infrastructure: The 2015 setup used temporary leases; the new plan aims for lasting utilities.

Land Acquisition via TDR Model

The NMC owns 100 acres in Tapovan’s 350-acre no-development zone. To acquire the remaining 250 acres, it proposed the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) model. Landowners will get development rights in other city areas instead of cash. The Maharashtra government must approve the plan.

Key Infrastructure Projects

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed officials to start multi-year projects early. The NMC will build:

  • Water supply networks.
  • Improved roads and sanitation.
  • Permanent shelters for future events.

Challenges

  • Meeting the 2026 deadline for land acquisition.
  • Minimizing environmental impact near the Godavari River.

Post-Mela Benefits

Post-2027, the infrastructure will serve Nashik residents, boosting local connectivity and resources.
