Record-Breaking Crowd at Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj Causes Massive Traffic Disruptions

The Mahakumbh festival in Prayagraj witnessed an unprecedented turnout on Sunday, with over 10.9 million pilgrims taking a holy dip at the Sangam—the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers—by 2 PM. This overwhelming influx led to severe traffic congestion across all entry points to the city.

Heavy Traffic Disruptions & Emergency Measures

Routes leading to the Sangam were severely clogged, with vehicles stranded for distances ranging from 10 to 15 kilometers. The gridlock extended throughout the city, prompting authorities to activate an Emergency Crowd Management Plan at Prayagraj Junction to control the situation. Reports indicated that vehicles from Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur, and Rewa faced prolonged delays due to the congestion. To mitigate further chaos, officials halted over 200,000 vehicles on the outskirts of Prayagraj, preventing additional strain on the city’s infrastructure.

Fire Breaks Out in Mahakumbh Area

Earlier in the day, a fire erupted in Sector-19 of the Mahakumbh area due to a gas cylinder leak, resulting in the burning of a Kalpvasi tent. Fire personnel quickly extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes, averting further damage. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Record-Breaking Pilgrim Participation

Despite the conclusion of the Amrit Snan festivals, the influx of devotees to Prayagraj for a holy dip continues. Since the commencement of Mahakumbh 2025, over 420 million pilgrims have bathed in the Triveni Sangam, exceeding the combined population of the United States and Canada.

Railway Implements Strict Movement Plan

To manage the swelling crowds, the Prayagraj Railway has extended the single-direction movement plan until further notice. Under this arrangement:

  • Entry to Prayagraj Junction is allowed only from the City Side via Platform No. 1.
  • Exits are directed through the Civil Lines side using Platforms 6 and 10.

This measure aims to streamline passenger movement and minimize congestion within the station premises.

Additional Measures for Smooth Transit

Authorities have introduced color-coded tickets and designated shelter slots to enhance the travel experience. These shelters, categorized based on passengers’ destinations, are equipped with temporary ticket counters, toilets, and waiting areas. Reserved ticket holders are granted entry through Gate No. 5, and passengers are advised to arrive well in advance of their scheduled departures. To further alleviate congestion, civil police have coordinated with local taxi, auto, and e-rickshaw drivers, urging them to adhere to the single-direction plan to ensure smooth transit for pilgrims.

Mahakumbh 2025: A Historic Religious Gathering

Held every 12 years, the Mahakumbh Mela is one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, attracting millions of devotees seeking spiritual purification. The 2025 edition has seen record-breaking participation, prompting authorities to implement extensive measures for crowd control, safety, and seamless management of pilgrims. With a continued influx of devotees, officials remain vigilant in ensuring the smooth operation of the festival while prioritizing the safety and well-being of all participants.
