History and Major Bathing Dates

The origins of Kumbh Mela come from Hindu mythology. According to the Samudra Manthan story, gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) fought for Amrit (nectar of immortality). During this battle, nectar drops fell at four places—Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. These sites became the locations of the Kumbh Mela, with the Maha Kumbh happening once every 144 years at Prayagraj.
